Three Senior Officers from the Central Bank of India, State Bank of Pakistan and Central Bank of Sri Lanka recently visited the RBAP – MABS office in Intramuros as part of their study tour organized by the Asia Pacific Rural and Agrcultural Credit Association. Members of RBAP MABS, led by Mr. John Owens, Chief of Party, discussed with the three representatives the microfinance best practices and the various mobile banking services being utilized by member rural banks, as well as the history of rural banking in the Philippines.

November is showing promising results for RBAP. First, more than 400 Rural Bankers attended its anniversary symposium at the historic Manila Hotel; second, representatives of the association, for the first time, successfully joined an international gathering promoting microinsurance (MI) in developing and emerging markets. Supported by the International Labour Organization (ILO), Ms. Ruth Aseron of RBAPMABS-USAID and Ms. Ghay Mapano of RBAP-RBRDFI were invited to participate at the recently concluded 7th International Conference on Microinsurance in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from November 8 to 10. With experts from around the world, the two shared their know-how and, conveyed the contribution and achievements of Philippine-based microinsurance promoters.

The Rural Bankers of the Philippines, which will be celebrating its charter anniversary in November, recently held its monthly Confederation Meeting at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. One of the highlights of the event was the presentation by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas on four (4) circulars benefitting the rural banking industry. Worth mentioning among the vast significant issuances is Circular No. 723, or the Outsourcing of Automated Teller Machine Service for off-site ATMs. Included on this particular issuance are certain conditions, which are subject to prior approval of the Monetary Board.
