The dynamics of development define the role of the rural banking industry as a potent force to boost up economic advancement in the countryside. Rural banks are partners of the vital players in the local economy – farmers, fisherfolks, micro, medium and small entrepreneurs - through financial and non-financial services such as credit, deposit and savings mobilization, and fee-based services.
To better fulfill this role and effectively cope up with the changing economic and political environment, locally and globally, the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines partnered with Ateneo Graduate School of Business to expand its training and development program for rural banks.
Salient features of the MOU:
On Training and Development:
1. Expansion of RBAP’s Training Modules
Ateneo will assist on the design, review and development of new training modules. The modules will be grouped according to major subject matters and implemented under a Tiered Model (Basic, Intermediate and Advance Course). With the development of this framework, the MOU opens a possibility that each major subject matter be credited as MBA units by Ateneo or a basis of granting a postgraduate diploma.
As part of RBAP’s thrust in training and development for the industry, together with Ateneo, it will also explore the possibility of creating a Master’s Degree on Rural Finance. This is to better equip the bank employees with working knowledge and expertise on rural banking sector that is duly accredited by Commission on Higher Education.
2. Pool of Speakers
Ateneo will assign qualified members of its faculty to take part in the implementation of the modules as resource speakers and become a member RBAP’s Pool of Speakers.
3. Training Facility for Out-of-Town Offerings
For out-of-town offerings, the Confederation/Federation is allowed to use at reasonable cost the training centers and facilities of Ateneo located in their satellite offices (e.g. Cebu and Davao). Using these centers and facilities will help the Federation save time and cost in identifying the venue for each training course.
On Research and Development
1. Ateneo will share relevant data, information and access to case studies, market studies and other researches conducted by the academe on banking and finance which will be used by the industry in drafting its position papers and researches.
2. Ateneo will also provide services to rural banks on new banking technology, lending programs and the likes to serve the bank’s interest in improving its management operations and decision-making.
3. A Reciprocal Link between Ateneo’s and RBAP’s website will also be installed to facilitate the sharing of industry information, studies and other relevant banking and finance issues in the Philippines and worldwide.
All the above initiatives are being carried out by the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines given its on-going efforts to boost up the rural banking sector as it aims to become a dependable and dynamic network of community banks.
