Rural Banking Week: 23-27 August 2004 (03 August 2004) |
|
3 August 2004
FOR: ALL CONFEDERATION AND FEDERATION PRESIDENTS FROM: (SGD.) SENEN D. GLORIOSO, President SUBJECT:RURAL BANKING WEEK: 23-27 August 2004 Dear Fellow Rural Bankers, We are pleased to inform you that the rural banking industry will be celebrating the Rural Banking Week this coming 23-27 August 2004. We shall be adopting the theme “Towards Greater Depositor Protection”, in keeping with the recent increase in the maximum deposit insurance to Two Hundred Fifty Thousand Pesos (P250,000). As we all agreed during the meeting of Confederation and Federation Presidents last 21 April 2004 in Cebu, the PDIC Charter Amendment will increase depositor confidence among banks due to higher deposit insurance, continuing insured status of banks and other mechanisms designed to promote depositor protection and corporate governance in the banking industry. We would therefore like to enjoin you to celebrate with us this occasion by holding your monthly Confederation or Federation meetings or dialogues with depositors during this week. For our part, RBAP shall be holding its regular Board Meeting on 23 August 2004. We plan to award special citations to various legislators who supported the proposed amendment to the Rural Banking Act (R.A. 7353) during the 12th Congress and we will urge them to re-file a similar amendment in the present 13th Congress. We shall distribute materials relevant to our theme, such as a Primer on the PDIC Charter Amendment for the enlightenment of our depositors and, possibly, posters depicting the benefits that depositors will derive from the new law. The maximum deposit insurance for each depositor of P250,000 directly covers 99 percent of the rural banking industry clients and therefore should be well-appreciated to reinforce rural banks’ developmental role in the local communities. Having said this, we wish to inform you that PDIC decals and standees are already available for sale at the PDIC. We are negotiating for a way to make it easier for banks to obtain these through the RBAP. We shall inform you what arrangements we have been able to work out with PDIC. We hope for your usual cooperation. |
