SUBJECT: MICROENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR AWARDS Dear Fellow Rural Bankers, The Citigroup and the Microfinance Council of the Philippines, with support from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, are once again conducting a nationwide search for outstanding Filipino micro-entrepreneurs. The Microentrepreneur of the Year Awards aims to help increase the awareness about the benefits of micro-finance and to provide incentives to micro-entrepreneurs to continuously grow and improve their businesses. First launched in 2002, the Microentrepreneur of the Year Awards is Citigroup’s expression of its support in the development of micro-enterprise and micro-finance worldwide as a tool to reduce poverty. In 2002, the top prize was awarded to Ms. Josie Alima (peanut cookie manufacturer) who is a client of First Isabela Cooperative Bank. Two micro-entrepreneurs were chosen as First Runners-up: Ms. Emilia Montinola (wholesaler/retailer of vegetables), a client of New Rural Bank of Victoria in San Carlos City, and Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Lim (snack foods producer), a client of the Rural Bank of Cantilan. As in 2002, the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines (RBAP), through the Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (MABS), will be a member of the Micro-finance Institution network that the awards body has tapped to screen nominations submitted by its members. For 2004, awards will be given in two categories: the Masikap Award, which is open to micro-entrepreneurs who successfully started a business that is now a reliable source of income for the family, and the Maunlad Award, which is open to micro-entrepreneurs that have grown a business to a level that is now generating employment for people apart from household or family members. For each category, the awards body will choose one national awardee who will receive a prize of P100,000 and three island group (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao) awardees who will receive P50,000 each. The loan officers of the eight awardees will receive P10,000 each as incentive for their participation. Attached are the nomination forms for each award category, the eligibility criteria, and the nomination and selection process. You may download and reproduce the nomination forms for distribution to your account officers (AOs). The AOs should fill up the nomination forms and submit these to the bank’s top management, who will then choose its top three nominees for each award category and submit the same to RBAP. RBAP strongly encourages all member rural banks to submit nominations from among your bank’s top micro-enterprise clients. RBAP will create a committee that will screen all nominations received from its members and submit a maximum of ten (10) nominees for each award category to the awards body for final selection. Please mail the filled-up nomination forms, along with a short write-up about the nominee and his/her enterprise, and pictures of the clients and the enterprise and/or videotapes with interviews to: Rural Bankers Association of the PhilippinesAccomplished nomination forms, including all requirements, should be received by RBAP until March 17, 2004 If you have any question on this matter, please contact Ms. Cheryl Balingit at phone nos. (02) 400-0971 or (02) 400-0940. Sincerely yours, DANIEL R. ARCENAS President |
