BIR unveils enhancements to online tax filing system

[LIMITED TO LARGE TAXPAYERS]

(December 14, 2003 - Sunday, Philippine Daily Inquirer)

THE BUREAU of Internal Revenue (BIR) has unveiled Friday more enhancements to its existing electronic tax filing and payment system (eFPS), allowing more large taxpayers to directly transact with the agency online, officials said.

Officials said the enhancements added eight new forms to the existing 15 forms, which is currently being used by more than 1,369 large taxpayers and about 236 selected individual taxpayers.

BIR said that the upgraded eFPS will be made available to 1,000 taxpayers in 40 computerized revenue district officers of the agency by end of 2003.

The eFPS was developed by the agency to provide a convenient way for taxpayers to file returns and pay taxes online. Now accessible via www.bir.gov.ph, the system also features a tools to compute taxes due, online receipts, and confirmations of payments.

The upgraded eFPS makes it easier for companies to download forms, which can be filled up offline, and submitted later to the agency, officials added.

It also provides a mechanism for searching and previously filed tax returns and payments. The web interface has also been improved for easier navigation through the online system, the agency said.

The eFPS is now connected to several accredited banks, including Land Bank of the Philippines, Development Bank of the Philippines, Philippine National Bank, Union Bank of the Philippines, Bank of the Philippine Islands, Security Bank Corp., Banco de Oro, Rizal Commercial Banking Corp., Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company, Equitable PCI Bank, and Bancnet.

In an internal agency newsletter, BIR Commissioner Guillermo Parayno was quoted as saying that the agency is expecting 10 percent of the total taxpaying population to use the eFPS by 2004.
