by Gil Cabacungan Jr.
(December 04, 2003 - Thursday, Philippine Daily Inquirer, p. a7, .) MALACAÑANG will consult the business sector on its plan to appoint former executive secretary Oscar Orbos and Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Romulo Neri as head of the Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Finance, respectively. |

Housing czar and spokesperson for the presidential campaign Michael Defensor said some Cabinet members might not opt to vacate their posts as they have changed their mind about running in the 2004 elections.
Defensor said the government's economic team was likely to have a "new look'' by next year as the President was still looking for people to fill up the finance post vacated by former investment banker Jose Isidro Camacho and the DTI post soon to be relinquished by former Rep. Manuel A. Roxas II who was still contemplating on whether to run for vice president or for senator. Defensor said it was important that businessmen support whoever leads the DTI and DoF. Defensor said several business groups were pushing Neri's appointment while Orbos was being pushed by a number of prominent business leaders. Defensor said that some Cabinet members who had planned to run in next year's election were having second thoughts. Defensor said Interior Secretary Jose Lina and Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit would not run while anti-kidnapping and anti-terrorist czar Angelo Reyes has yet to make up his mind about the elections. "So far, only Roxas is confirmed to be running next year,'' Defensor said. Lina, Dayrit and Reyes were rumored to be interested in an elective post because of their growing visibility in media. home | latest news |
