Market Overview

The International Monetary Fund raised its 2006 economic growth forecast for Asia to 8.4%, from 7.9%; China to 10%, from 9.5% and India to 8.3%, from 7.3%, but left unchanged its estimate for the Philippines at 5%.

Market Overview

President Arroyo announced on Friday a state of national emergency at the height of Manila’s 20th anniversary celebration of Edsa I – better know as People Power. Military authorities detained the commander of the elite scout rangers on reports that the latter was recruiting fellow officers to join the anniversay march along the city’s main artery Edsa. Police used truncheons to break up rallies and raided a newpaper. On Saturday, authorities apprehended a retired police chief and former security adviser to former president Ramos.
